Seoul, Busan and Gyeongju look clean on a map. What the map hides is the time between one hotel and the next: check-out, station travel, luggage storage, waiting for check-in and getting from Singyeongju Station into the historic core. Gyeongju can absolutely justify an overnight. It just needs to return something you would otherwise lose.
Count full days before assigning nights
Arrival day, departure day and every city-change day are not automatically full sightseeing days. A morning arrival can still have usable time; a late arrival may only manage dinner. The same is true of the Gyeongju transfer. A short train ride does not mean you step off the platform into the historic district.

Transport time alone cannot decide whether to stay
Gyeongju's official transport information makes the city reachable from Seoul and Busan, but travel time only answers whether you can get there. It does not answer how much of the day remains after the station, luggage and hotel handoff.
The useful question is what the overnight changes. If staying lets you keep a relaxed evening and another usable morning before moving on, the third key has a job. If you arrive late and leave early, it is mostly a packing exercise.
When a 3 Seoul + 2 Busan + 1 Gyeongju split works
This split works when Seoul still keeps the directions you care about, Busan still has more than a token beach afternoon, and Gyeongju owns a real evening plus a next-morning use. The numbers themselves are not the reason.
It becomes much weaker when arrival and departure already shorten Seoul or Busan. In that case, I would turn Gyeongju into a day trip or save it for another trip rather than make all three cities feel abbreviated.
Gyeongju overnight needs two usable blocks
Think of the stay as buying two things. The first is the evening after arrival: dinner, a walk, a night view or simply not racing back to Busan. The second is the next morning: breakfast, one more stop, or a calm departure toward the next city.
If only one of those exists, compare against Gyeongju day trip vs overnight. A day trip can be cleaner when you only want a few fixed sights and prefer to wake up in the same Busan hotel the next day.
Protect Busan before stealing one of its days
Busan needs directional logic. Markets, the port and old-city districts sit on one side of the trip; Haeundae and the eastern coast sit on another. If Gyeongju removes the only full day that allowed one of those sides to work, the overnight is costing more than one hotel night.
Before cutting Busan, check how many days Busan needs on a first trip. If Busan has no complete direction left, keep Gyeongju as a day trip or drop it.
Three options are all valid
Stay one night in Gyeongju: best when the evening and next morning both matter, and the route naturally continues onward.
Day-trip from Busan: best when you want selected sights but value keeping one hotel, one dinner area and the next morning in Busan.
Skip this time: best when Seoul and Busan already contain fixed events, family rest needs, weather buffers or shortened arrival/departure days.
The final airport decides the city order
Seoul → Gyeongju → Busan looks linear, but your actual flights matter more than the diagram. If your return flight is from Seoul, you may still need another long move before departure. If you fly out of Busan, that same order can be much cleaner.
Lock the final night first, then work backward. Do not choose a three-city sequence because it looks elegant and discover later that the hardest transfer sits immediately before your flight.
Book the city, then the address
Do not compare ten hotels across three cities before deciding whether Gyeongju is even an overnight. First give every night a job. Seoul handles arrival or major city days; Busan handles its full direction; Gyeongju handles an evening and next morning. Only then should hotel location enter the decision.
Four checks before booking the third hotel
- Check the actual KTX or bus schedule for your date.
- Check the final leg from station or terminal to the hotel.
- Check luggage storage, check-in and cancellation terms at all three hotels.
- Fix the city of your final night before paying for the Gyeongju stay.
If one of these is still blank, keep the Gyeongju hotel refundable. “It is on the way” is not enough reason to create a third check-in.
